Video analytics and image fusion are key tools in intelligence and surveillance

Technology focus -- Today's video security technology can provide impressive detailed surveillance in many ways, but system integrators are still looking for better ways of interpreting the detailed night and day images these modern tools provide. Video analytics, image fusion, and high-definition capability are just some of the methods they are developing.

Warship radar technology designers set sights on next-generation Navy cruiser

Program focus -- The Lockheed Martin Corp. Maritime Systems & Sensors (MS2) segment in Moorestown, N.J., and Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems in Tewksbury, Mass., are preparing for the expected release of the U.S. Navy's radar systems requirements for the next-generation cruiser surface warship, now called CG(X).

The time has come for military ground robots

Special report -- Unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) technology has been in development for decades, but the Army's Future Combat Systems program and the need to keep military personnel out of harm's way are building momentum like never before to begin manufacturing and deploying UGVs in large numbers.

Making up for lost time

Posted by Courtney E. HowardLooking back over my life, I realize that, in the interest of saving time and being as efficient as possible, I have missed out on a lot. I don't mean family and friends, or memories I haven't made. I spent valuable time with them, doing just that. I am talking about entertainment. When I ponder the path or route I have taken in life, I find a "pot hole" or two of

Are they watching us?

Posted by John McHaleBefore I left for the Paris Air Show earlier this month a friend in the industry said I should expect all my phone calls -- cellular or other -- to be listened to and expect all my emails to be read.I said are you serious? Who wants to know what an innocent trade pub editor has to say to his office? Apparently this gentleman instructs all his employees before leaving the

Paris exhibitors credit military market for stability

Posted by John McHaleOne of the main questions exhibitors were asked at the Paris Air Show this past week was how were they doing in the midst of the economic downturn. Most credited their military systems designs with keeping them afloat."Military wins saved our business," Francois Hervieux, director of sales for Air Data in Quebec told me. Commercial wins have dried up due the economic downturn

Aeronautics not just space

Posted By John McHaleWalking through the U.S. Pavilion today at the Paris Air Show I was handed a NASA sticker by a tall, friendly guy wondering if I knew that NASA did aeronautics and not just space -- because the first A in NASA stands for aeronautics as in National Aeronautics and Space Administration.I said of course I do, but failed to impress him with any other NASA aeronautical facts, so

Raining in Paris

A steady rain welcomed visitors to the Paris Air Show at La Bourget Airport in France this morning. The wet, gloomy weather matched the somber tone of recent events. The crash of an Air France jet over the Atlantic earlier this month combined with the struggling commercial avionics/aircraft market has subdued the mood of delegates to the 100th Paris Air Show. It's not all doom and gloom though.

The official turn over requires all U.S. combat forces to be removed from cities, villages and localities in Iraq by 30 June. "This is an important step in long-term strategic relationship with Iraq," he added. Since October, McMillan said they have closed or returned more than 120 bases and facilities in Iraq leading up to the present moment where the last bases and facilities in Iraq have been closed, but it doesn't end their obligations under the security agreement. "Some of the U.S. forces will remain in those areas but only in a training, advisor or coordination capacity with the Iraqi forces," McMillan said. Audio(Mp3)
